The Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz is a famous Christmas market held every year in Munich, Germany. It takes place in the city's main square, Marienplatz. This market is a wonderful place to experience German Christmas traditions.

A Long History

The Christkindlmarkt is Munich's biggest and oldest Christmas market. It was first mentioned in official records way back in 1310. Back then, it was called the Nikolaimarkt, named after Saint Nicholas. This makes it one of the oldest Christmas markets in all German-speaking countries.

In 1806, the market's name changed to Christmarkt. Since 1972, the market has been held at Marienplatz. Before that, it moved around to different locations in the city. Over the years, the market has grown much bigger. The city's cultural office organizes this special event.

What You'll Find There

The Kripperlmarkt, a special market for Nativity scenes.

This market has about 140 different stands. Around three million people visit it every year from all over the world. There is also a lot of music and cultural events to enjoy.

A huge Christmas tree stands in front of the town hall. It is almost 30 meters (about 98 feet) tall and has around 2,500 sparkling lights. Each year, a different town from Austria or Italy donates this tree to the people of Munich.

As a thank you, the donating town gets to show off in the town hall courtyard. They can even run a Glühwein stand there. Many towns want this chance, so there's a long waiting list! The market usually opens on the Friday before the first Advent Sunday. It stays open every day until Christmas Eve.

The Kripperlmarkt

Just west of Marienplatz, near Stachus, you'll find the special Kripperlmarkt. This market focuses only on Nativity scenes. More than ten stands around the Richard Strauss fountain sell Nativity figures and other accessories. You can also find some food and drink stands there.

The Kripperlmarkt is also open daily. It closes on December 24th (Christmas Eve) at 2 PM.
