Christmas Tapestry is a picture book from 2002, written and illustrated by Patricia Polacco. This heartwarming story shows how a Christian family helps a Jewish couple find each other again during the Christmas holidays. It's a tale about kindness and unexpected connections.
What the Story is About
The book follows a boy named Jonathan. His father, a Baptist preacher, moves their family to Detroit. Jonathan has to get used to a new city and a new home.
Jonathan helps his father prepare their church for Christmas. One day, ice causes a hole in the church wall. To cover it, Jonathan and his father use their last bit of money to buy a beautiful tapestry.
While waiting for the bus, an old woman invites them for tea. They soon discover something amazing: the tapestry was made by the old woman herself! It was a special wedding canopy, called a chuppah, for her wedding. She and her husband were separated a long time ago during World War II.
On Christmas Eve, a man comes to fix the hole in the church wall. He sees the chuppah and recognizes it too! It turns out he is the old woman's husband, whom she thought had died. He also believed she was gone. The tapestry brings them back together after many years.
Jonathan learns a valuable lesson from this event: sometimes, things happen exactly as they should.
The Story's Inspiration
