Christmasville is a small, quiet place in Haywood County, Tennessee, United States. It's called an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and businesses that don't have their own local government. It's similar to a neighborhood or a small village. Christmasville is located about 6.4 kilometers (4 miles) north-northwest of a larger town called Brownsville.

A Look at Christmasville's Past

Christmasville has an interesting history, especially how it got its name and what life was like there long ago.

How Christmasville Got Its Name

The community of Christmasville is named after the Christmas family. This family lived in the area starting around the early 1900s. They were an important part of the community for about 25 years.

Another family, the Castellaw family, stayed in the area for a long time. Because of them, the community was sometimes called Castellaw Corner. This name isn't used much anymore.

Businesses in Early Christmasville

In the early 1920s, Christmasville was a busy little place. It had three grocery stores where people could buy food and other supplies.

  • One grocery store was run by the Christmas family themselves.
  • Other stores were operated by local people named Simon Pittman and Sam Dedmon.

The Christmas family also owned and ran several important businesses. They had a cotton gin, which was a machine that separated cotton fibers from their seeds. They also operated a grist mill, which ground grain into flour, and a sawmill, which cut logs into lumber.

Sadly, the cotton gin and sawmill owned by the Christmas family burned down in 1922. After this, the Christmas family decided to move to nearby Brownsville. The grocery stores changed owners over the years. The last one closed its doors permanently in 1973. Later, another sawmill operated in the area from 1967 to 1982.

Schools in the Community

Christmasville was once home to two schools: Hickory Grove and Lone Oak. These schools taught students up to the 10th grade.

  • The first Lone Oak school building was destroyed by a strong windstorm.
  • The second Lone Oak building later burned down.
  • The third building for Lone Oak school is still standing today. It was moved from its original spot and is now used as a private home.

Hickory Grove School stopped holding classes in the 1960s. After it closed, the building was sold and also moved away from the community.
