Christophe-Gabriel Allegrain (born October 11, 1710 – died 1795) was a famous French sculptor. He was known for mixing two art styles: Neoclassical and Rococo. His brother-in-law, Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, who was also a famous sculptor, influenced his work. Allegrain was born in Paris into a family of artists.

His Most Famous Work: The Bathers

Allegrain's most famous artwork is a marble statue called Bather (La Baigneuse). This statue was ordered for the king's palaces in 1755. A small model of it was shown at a big art show in Paris in 1757.

When the finished marble statue was finally shown in 1767, it was a huge hit! In 1772, King Louis XV gave the statue to Madame du Barry for her beautiful home, the Château de Louveciennes. This home was known for its new Neoclassical style.

Madame du Barry liked the statue so much that she asked Allegrain to make another similar one in 1776. He finished this second statue in 1778. These two statues were displayed in her garden as Vénus and Diane. They represented her past and present life. Both statues are now kept in the Louvre Museum in Paris.

Smaller copies of these statues were also very popular. People continued to reproduce them throughout the 1800s.

What Happened Later?

In 1774, the artist Joseph Duplessis painted a portrait of Allegrain. This painting helped Duplessis get a place in the important Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture.

Allegrain taught several students, including his own son and François-Dominique-Aimé Milhomme. Christophe-Gabriel Allegrain passed away in Paris in 1795.
