Christophe Moehrlen (born January 20, 1800 – died February 28, 1871) was a Swiss pastor, teacher, and writer. He was originally from Germany but lived and worked in Switzerland. He is best known for writing books for children, often using the pen name Christoph Irenius.
Life and Work
Christophe Moehrlen worked as a teacher in several places. He taught at the Evangelical College in Schiers and at a special home for those in need called Calame in Le Locle. He also taught at a school in Beuggen.
Later in his life, Moehrlen became a pastor in Payerne. While there, he started a special school for boys. This school was a "reformatory," which means it helped guide young boys who might have been struggling or getting into trouble. His goal was to help them learn and grow into responsible people. He later served as a pastor in Daillens.
Writing for Young Readers
Moehrlen wrote several educational books. In 1839, he published an important book called Eine wahrhafte Geschichte, which means "A True Story." He wrote this book under his pen name, Christoph Irenius. It was an autobiographical book, meaning it told parts of his own life story.
Christophe Moehrlen's daughter married a famous Swiss writer named Otto Sutermeister.
His Published Works
Moehrlen wrote books that were often about Christian faith and history. One of his notable works was a two-volume set titled Das Buch der Wahrheitszeugen. This translates to "The Book of Truth Witnesses."
This book shared historical stories for both schools and homes. It focused on the continuous history of the Protestant-Evangelical Church through different centuries. You can find digital copies of Volume 1 and Volume 2 online.
