Christopher Amott's Musical Journey

Early Life and Starting Music

Christopher Amott was born in Halmstad, Sweden. When he was 14, he started learning to play the guitar. His older brother, Michael, played in a band called Carcass, which inspired Christopher. He played in local bands and later went to music college when he was 18.

Forming Arch Enemy and Armageddon

In 1996, while Christopher was still in music school, his brother Michael asked him to play guitar solos for his new band, Arch Enemy. Their first album, Black Earth, came out in Japan in 1996. It was played often on Japanese MTV.

In 1997, Arch Enemy was invited to play concerts in Japan. While there, Christopher got a deal for his own side project called Armageddon. This band started out playing a style of music similar to Arch Enemy. Armageddon released their first album, Crossing the Rubicon, in 1997.

Arch Enemy's next album, Stigmata, was also very popular in Japan. It was the first Arch Enemy album to be released in the United States by Century Media records.

Exploring New Sounds

Arch Enemy continued to gain fans around the world. They released Burning Bridges and Burning Japan Live 1999 in 1999. After a short break, Christopher's band Armageddon released their second album, Embrace the Mystery, in Japan in 2000. This album was different because it featured a singer and had more of a power metal sound. This showed Christopher wanted to try different types of metal music. In 2000, he also played a guitar solo on a song called "Suburban Me" for the band In Flames.

In 2001, a new singer named Angela Gossow joined Arch Enemy, and they released the album Wages of Sin. After touring the world with Arch Enemy, Christopher went back to Armageddon. In 2002, Armageddon released their album Three in Japan. On this album, Christopher sang the lead vocals himself, and it was mostly a power metal album.

Taking a Break and Returning

Arch Enemy released Anthems of Rebellion in 2003 and went on another world tour. In 2005, the band recorded Doomsday Machine. Right after recording, Christopher decided to leave Arch Enemy. For the next two years, he taught music in Sweden and went to university.

In March 2007, Christopher announced he was rejoining Arch Enemy as a full member. He came back when the band was almost finished writing songs for their album Rise of the Tyrant.

Solo Work and New Projects

In January 2010, Christopher shared that he would release a solo album called "Follow Your Heart" later that year.

On March 5, 2012, Christopher left Arch Enemy again. He said he wanted to focus more on his solo music. Arsis guitarist Nick Cordle took his place in Arch Enemy. In April 2012, Christopher moved to New York City in the United States. After getting his green card in early 2013, he planned to record a new Armageddon album. He also worked with the Japanese pop and metal band Babymetal, playing guitars for a special version of their song "Ijime, Dame, Zettai".

In 2014, Christopher started recording the new Armageddon album with a new group of musicians. Their album, "Captivity & Devourment", was released in January 2015 by Listenable Records.

Later, when Arch Enemy's guitarist Nick Cordle left the band, Christopher temporarily rejoined Arch Enemy for the rest of their North American tour. After that, the famous guitarist Jeff Loomis officially joined Arch Enemy.

Reunions and Dark Tranquillity

On October 10, 2015, at Japan's Loud Park Festival, Arch Enemy's singer Alissa White-Gluz invited Christopher Amott and Johan Liiva (an earlier singer) to join them on stage. This brought back the Burning Bridges lineup. They played some old songs together.

In 2016, while Armageddon and Arch Enemy were touring together in Mexico, Christopher made a guest appearance with Arch Enemy and played two songs.

Starting on May 23, 2016, Christopher and the original Arch Enemy members reunited as "Project Black Earth" for a special tour in Japan. They played their first album, Black Earth, completely, along with songs from other early albums.

In 2017, Christopher began touring with Dark Tranquillity, helping them with their European tour. He continued to tour with them throughout 2018 in Europe and North America. On March 30, 2020, it was announced that Christopher Amott and Johan Reinholdz had officially joined Dark Tranquillity. Christopher played on their 2020 album Moment. He left the band in July 2023.

Christopher released his third solo album, Electric Twilight, on January 30, 2020. This album has a synthwave style, which is very different from his usual metal music.
