Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Christopher Martyn (born around 1617 – died January 26, 1678) was an English politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a main part of the government, at different times between 1646 and 1660. He also fought as a soldier for the Parliamentary side during the English Civil War.

Christopher Martyn's Early Life and Military Role

Christopher Martyn was a gentleman from a town called Plympton. He joined the army that supported the Parliament and became a captain. In April 1644, he was in charge of the soldiers protecting Plymouth. He led an attack against the Royalists (who supported the King) at a place called New Bridge. His troops captured 200 enemy soldiers.

Just two days later, the Royalists tried to attack back, but Martyn's forces pushed them away. He even chased their cavalry (soldiers on horseback) all the way to Plympton Bridge, which was close to where the Royalist army was staying.

Martyn's Time as a Member of Parliament

In 1646, Christopher Martyn was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area of Plympton Erle. This happened during a period known as the Long Parliament. An MP is a person elected to represent their local area in the House of Commons, helping to make laws and decisions for the country.

He continued to serve in Parliament during different periods, even when the government changed. For example, he was part of the Rump Parliament. In 1653, he was chosen to represent the region of Devon in a special Parliament called the Barebones Parliament.

Martyn was elected as an MP for Plympton Erle again in 1659, for the Third Protectorate Parliament. He was re-elected one more time in 1660, for the Convention Parliament. This shows he was an important figure in politics during a very changing time in English history.
