Chulucanas is a town in Morropón Province, Piura Region, Peru. It is located in the Piura Valley, near where the Charanal River meets the Piura River. Chulucanas is an important town, serving as the main center for both the Chulucanas District and Morropón Province.
This town is very famous for its special pottery. This pottery style started a long, long time ago, even before the Inca empire. Today, people all over the world buy it! The Peruvian government helps support Chulucanas pottery as one of its seven special products. The designs on the pottery are quite varied, but often feature black and white colors. You can find several larger companies making pottery here, but also many small workshops in Chulucanas and a nearby village called Quatro Esquinas.
A big celebration in Chulucanas is the Fiesta de Cristo Resucitado, which happens during Easter.
There's also a group called Victor's Vision that works in Chulucanas. It's a nonprofit organization that helps bright young people who don't have much money. They offer extra school support, guidance, and resources.
In 2013, Chulucanas had a very hot day, reaching 39.8 °C (103.6 °F). This is one of the highest temperatures ever recorded in Peru, shared with the Lancones District.

Chulucanas Pottery: A Special Art
The area of Chulucanas is known for a special type of ceramic art. This pottery even has an official label called a "appellation of origin" named Chulucanas. This means it's recognized as coming from this specific place.
What Makes Chulucanas Pottery Unique?
The main natural things used to make Chulucanas pottery are clay, sand, mango leaves, and the local weather. The clay comes from special places called quarries. There are two main types: yellow clay (arcilla amarilla) and black clay (arcilla negra). These clays have tiny particles that make them easy to shape. They also contain things like iron oxide and other natural materials that help the pottery shine when it's polished.
How Chulucanas Pottery Is Made
The artists in Chulucanas use old techniques passed down from ancient cultures like the Vicús and the Tallán. Each piece of pottery goes through many steps before it's finished.
- First, the artists shape the raw clay using their hands and feet.
- Then, they use wooden tools and stones to make the shapes even better.
- Next, they add the first colors, which come from natural things like leaves and soil.
- After that, the pottery pieces are put into an oven.
- They are then placed in the smoke from burning mango leaves for hours. This smoke gives Chulucanas pottery its special black color.
- To finish, each ceramic piece is polished by hand with a smooth black stone. This gives it a beautiful, shiny look.
In 2006, some groups of potters and a technology center asked for the "Chulucanas" label to be official. It was finally registered in 2008.
