Chumpol Silpa-archa (ชุมพล ศิลปอาชา) was an important Thai politician. He was born on June 6, 1940, and passed away on January 21, 2013. He held several big jobs in the Thai government.
From 2008 to 2013, he was the Minister of Tourism and Sports. He also served as Deputy Prime Minister from 2011 to 2013. In January 2009, he became the leader of the Chartthaipattana Party. Chumpol was the younger brother of former Prime Minister Banharn Silpa-archa.

Early Life and Education
Chumpol Silpa-archa was born in Suphan Buri, Thailand. He worked hard in his studies. He earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from Thammasat University. Later, he traveled to the United States. There, he received a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Syracuse University.
Political Journey
Before becoming a politician, Chumpol worked as a civil servant. He also taught political science at Thammasat University. In 1979, he decided to enter the world of politics.
Representing Suphan Buri
Chumpol joined the Thai Nation Party, which was a conservative-populist group. He was chosen to represent his home area, Suphan Buri Province, in the Thai parliament. Over the years, he took on many important government roles.
Key Government Roles
- In 1986 and 1992, he served as the Vice President of the House of Representatives. This is a very important position in parliament.
- From 1997 to 1998, he was the Minister of Education. He worked in the government led by Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai.
Leading a New Party
In 2008, a court ruling affected many politicians. Chumpol was not part of his party's main leadership group. Because of this, he was not banned from political activities. This allowed him to become the leader of the Chartthaipattana Party. This new party was like a continuation of his old party.
Minister of Tourism and Sports
After his party joined a new government, Chumpol became the Minister of Tourism and Sports. He served under Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva. In this role, he helped promote tourism in Thailand.
Deputy Prime Minister
In 2011, there was a new election. The Pheu Thai Party, led by Yingluck Shinawatra, won. Chumpol's party then joined a new government with Pheu Thai. On August 9, 2011, he continued as Minister of Tourism and Sports. He was also given the additional important role of Deputy Prime Minister.
Passing Away
Chumpol Silpa-archa passed away on January 21, 2013. He was 72 years old. He died from heart failure at Ramathibodi Hospital in Bangkok. At the time of his death, he was still serving as both Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism and Sports.
Royal Honors
Chumpol Silpa-archa received high honors from the King of Thailand. He was given the Special Class of both the Order of the White Elephant and the Order of the Crown of Thailand. These awards recognize his important service to the country.
