Becoming a Wood Scientist
Chung-Yun Hse came from Taiwan. He went to college and earned a master's degree from Louisiana State University. He studied how soil in forests works.
Later, in 1972, he got his PhD from the University of Washington. His PhD was in wood science and technology. This means he learned a lot about wood and how to use it.
His Work at the Forest Service
In 1963, a new research program started in Pineville, Louisiana. This program wanted to find better ways to use wood from forests. One big goal was to create strong glues for making plywood from southern pine trees. Chung-Yun Hse was chosen to lead this important research.
During his 50 years with the U.S. Forest Service, Dr. Hse did amazing things. He created three US patents, which are like special inventions. He also wrote or helped write over 150 research papers. Many scientists from all over the world came to learn from him. He retired in 2020 as an expert scientist.
Awards and Recognition
Dr. Hse received many awards for his hard work and discoveries.
Awards from the U.S. Forest Service
- 1992 – Award for sharing new technology
- 2001 – Award for international programs
- 2003 – Award for excellent science over many years
- 2004 – Special award for distinguished science from the Forest Service Chief
National and International Awards
- 1994 – Award for helping with forestry cooperation in China
- 1998 – Became a Fellow of the International Academy of Wood Science
- 2001 – Received China's Friendship Award for his support and cooperation
- 2008 – Fred W. Gottschalk Memorial Award for great service to the Forest Products Society
- 2012 – Distinguished Service Award from the Society of Wood Science and Technology
- 2013 – The International Scientific and Technological Cooperation Award from The People's Republic of China
His Inventions (Patents)
Dr. Hse's inventions helped make wood products better and safer.
- Method of bonding particle board and the like using polyisocyanate/phenolic adhesive (1980). This was a new way to glue wood particles together to make strong boards.
- Process for detoxification of CCA-treated wood (2007). This invention helped make treated wood safer by removing harmful chemicals.
- Process for rapid microwave-enhanced detoxification of CCA-treated wood (2011). This was an even faster way to make treated wood safe using microwaves.
