History of the Church
The community for this church started in the early 1930s. Before the main church building was constructed, people gathered in a parish hall.
Early Buildings
In 1933, the first stone was laid for a parish hall. This hall was designed by an architect named George Bernard Cox. Church services were held in this hall. Later, in 1936, a school was built, and services moved there.
Building the Main Church
The foundation stone for the current church building was laid on July 18, 1959. The church was designed by a famous architect, Adrian Gilbert Scott. It was built to hold 500 people. The construction of the church cost £75,000 at that time.
The church was officially blessed on Whit Monday in 1961 by Archbishop Francis Grimshaw. This means it was dedicated for its religious purpose.
Special Features of the Church
The church has some unique features inside. The main altar, called the High Altar, is made from a special blue stone called Blue Horton Stone from Banbury. It has a top and base made of Italian Grey Marble.
Above the Lady Altar, there is a beautiful wooden carving. This scene was created by Ferdinando Stuflesser, an artist from Ortisei, Italy.
Church Recognition
In February 2013, experts looked at the church building to see if it should be given a special historical protection status. While it didn't meet the highest national standards for listing, it is still recognized as a very important building locally. It is listed at Grade A, which means it's a significant local landmark.
