History of the Church
The main part of Santo Domingo was built in the late 1100s. It was constructed on the same spot where an older, smaller church used to be.
Over the years, the church was changed and made bigger. In the 1500s, a convent for Dominican monks was built next to it. At that time, new sections like the transept (the part that crosses the main hall to form a cross shape) and the choir area were added.
A Story Carved in Stone
The most famous part of the church is its front wall, called the façade. It's like an outdoor art gallery made of stone.
The Amazing Doorway
The main entrance is covered in detailed carvings that tell stories from the Bible. The curved stone bands above the door, called the archivolt, show many figures. These include the 24 Elders of the Apocalypse (important figures from the Bible), and scenes from the life of Jesus Christ.
Above the door is a half-circle area called the tympanum. It has a carving of God the Father holding the Christ Child, surrounded by angels and other religious figures. The pillars on the sides of the door also have carvings that show stories from the Book of Genesis, like the creation of the world.
The Rose Window
High above the doorway is a large, round window called a rose window. It is designed to look like a flower with stone "petals" and is a stunning example of Romanesque art.
Inside the Church
The inside of the church is designed in the shape of a Latin cross. The ceiling is made of curved stone, known as a barrel vault, which looks like the inside of a tunnel. This design makes the church feel strong and peaceful.
