History of the Church
This church was built a very long time ago. It started in the late 1100s. It was built on top of an even older church. That church was dedicated to a saint named San Tomé.
How the Church Changed Over Time
The church has been changed a bit over the years. Some parts were added later. For example, a new section was built in the 1500s. This part is called the transept and choir area. A transept is the part of a cross-shaped church that crosses the main body. The choir area is where singers sit. At that time, a Dominican convent was also built next to the church. A convent is a building where religious people live.
Amazing Stone Carvings
The front of the church, called the façade, is very special. It has two rows of arches on each side of the main door. Above the door, there is a large round window. This window is called a rose window.
The main door, or portal, has amazing carvings. These carvings are on the arches above the door. This carved archway is called an archivolt. It shows many scenes from the Bible. You can see stories like the "Massacre of the Innocents." This story is about a sad event from the Bible. It also shows scenes from the life of Jesus.
Right above the door, there is a carved space called a tympanum. It shows God the Father with Jesus as a child. There are also angels and other important figures. The columns next to the door also have carvings. These carvings, called capitals, show more Bible stories. They tell tales from the book of Genesis. They also show more scenes from Jesus's life.
Inside the Church
The inside of the church is shaped like a Latin cross. This means it looks like a cross from above. It has a main area called a nave. There are also two side areas called aisles. The ceilings are curved. They are called barrel vaults.
