The Church of Saint Michael (in Spanish, Iglesia de San Miguel) is a beautiful and historic church located in Jerez de la Frontera, a city in southern Spain. It is considered a very important historical building. It was officially recognized as a Bien de Interés Cultural (which means 'Property of Cultural Interest') in 1931.

How the Church Began

The Church of Saint Michael began to be built in the late 1400s. You can even see a special stone plaque at the entrance, dated 1484. Many people believe that the powerful Catholic Monarchs (King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella) asked for the church to be built. They did this when they visited Jerez in 1484.

Before this grand church, there was a smaller, older chapel (called a hermitage) in the same spot. Building the Church of Saint Michael took a very long time, several centuries! Because of this, it has a mix of different styles. You can see elements from the late Gothic period, as well as early and full Renaissance and Baroque styles. This makes it look a bit like a cathedral.

What the Church Looks Like

The Church of Saint Michael has a rectangular shape when you look at it from above. Inside, it is divided into three main sections called naves. The middle nave has a much higher ceiling than the other two.

Between each nave, there are large pillars. These pillars are decorated in a beautiful, flowery Gothic style. Many people think this church is one of the most impressive buildings in the city of Jerez.
