History of the Church

The Church of San Pedro Apóstol has a unique design. It has three main sections, called naves, and a special shape that looks a bit like a horn. The church was built in two main stages.

Its oldest parts, like the apse (the rounded end of the church) and the brick anteapse (the area just before the apse), were built way back in the 13th century. That's over 700 years ago!

The rest of the church was built much later, in the middle of the 16th century. This second building phase was completed quite quickly. The inside roof, which covers the new naves, was made from wood. It was carefully connected to the older apse section. The tall bell tower, which you can see from far away, was built by a person named Juan de Ballesteros.

Amazing Frescoes

Inside the church, especially in the apse and around the altar, you can see beautiful paintings called frescoes. These frescoes were finished in the 14th century. They are painted directly onto the walls.

Some of these paintings show important figures. For example, there's a fresco of Saint John the Evangelist, who is shown holding a wine glass. Another fresco might be of Saint Roch, who is depicted walking with a dog carrying a loaf of bread.

Right within the altar area, there are two more preserved frescoes. One shows the story of Adam's temptation. The other shows the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. Perhaps the most impressive of all the old Romanesque frescoes in the church is the one of the Pantocrator. This is a powerful image of Christ as the ruler of all.

The Church of San Pedro Apóstol is part of the Diocese of Alcalá de Henares. It belongs to the archpriesthood of Daganzo.
