History of the Church
How the Church Started
In 1520, a man named Cristobal de Ponte founded the town of Garachico. He gave a piece of land to build this church. The church was named after Saint Anne. This was because Cristobal de Ponte's wife was named Ana de Vergara. Building the main part of the church began by 1532. It was finished by 1542.
Rebuilding After the Volcano
A volcanic eruption happened in 1706. This event is known as the Eruption of Trevejo (1706). The eruption caused a lot of damage to the church. Because of this, the church had to be rebuilt. The rebuilding work took place between 1714 and 1721. New walls and roofs were put in place. The builders followed the original plans for the church.
Recent Restorations
The church was given a big makeover in the 1990s. Three of its statues were carefully fixed in 2010. Work to repair the church's tower began in 2014. This work included fixing the wooden parts. The outside stone and finishes were also repaired. Even the electrical wires and floor were replaced. This repair work cost about €253,000. The church tower reopened in 2016. After that, it hosted several art shows.
Cultural Importance
The Cabildo de Tenerife officially recognized the church in 2010. They listed it as a monument of cultural interest. This means it is a very important historical building. It is part of a group of important cultural sites in Garachico. This group is called a conjunto historico.
Design and Art Inside
Church Architecture
The front of the church mixes two old styles of building. These are called Plateresque and Renaissance architecture. Inside, the church is divided into three main parts. It has many arches and columns. In Spanish, these parts are called naves. In English, we might say it has a main area and two side areas.
Art and Special Items
You can find many different altars inside the church. Some of these altars are in the Baroque style. There are also many beautiful sculptures and paintings.
The church has a special statue of Christ. It is called an image of Christ of Mercy. This statue came from Mexico. It was made using the marrow of corn. There is also a baptismal font made of marble. This font is very old, from the 17th century.
The church also has a museum. This museum shows off many pieces of sacred art.
