The Church of Santa María de Sariegomuerto (which means Iglesia de Santa María de Sariegomuerto in Spanish) is a very old and beautiful church. It is a Roman Catholic church built in the Romanesque style. You can find it in a place called Villaviciosa, which is in the region of Asturias, Spain.

About the Church

This church is a great example of Romanesque architecture. This style was popular in Europe during the Middle Ages, roughly from the 10th to the 12th centuries. Romanesque buildings often have thick walls, round arches, large towers, and decorative carvings. They were built to be strong and last a long time. The Church of Santa María de Sariegomuerto shows many of these classic features.

A Look Back in Time

The Church of Santa María de Sariegomuerto was likely built between the 12th and 13th centuries. That means it is over 800 years old! Some old papers from the year 921 seem to mention the church. These documents connect it to gifts given by King Ordoño II to the Oviedo Cathedral.

Over hundreds of years, the church has been repaired and updated many times. It has seen a lot of history! Sadly, the church was badly damaged by fire during the Spanish Civil War. After that, it had to be rebuilt to bring it back to its original beauty. Today, it stands as an important historical building in Asturias.
