The Church of Santa María de Sariegomuerto (which means Saint Mary of Sariegomuerto Church in Spanish) is a very old and beautiful Roman Catholic church. It is located in the town of Villaviciosa, in the region of Asturias, Spain. This church was built in the Romanesque style, which was popular many centuries ago.
History of the Church
The Church of Santa María de Sariegomuerto was likely built between the 12th and 13th centuries. That means it's over 800 years old! Some old papers from the year 921 seem to mention the church. These documents are connected to King Ordoño II and gifts he made to the Oviedo Cathedral.
Over hundreds of years, the church has been repaired and updated many times. It has seen a lot of history. Sadly, during the Spanish Civil War, the church was set on fire. After that, it had to be rebuilt so people could use it again. Today, it stands as an important historical building in Asturias.
