The Church of St. Stephen is a historic Roman Catholic church building. It is located in the small town of St. Stephen, Minnesota, in the United States. This church is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saint Cloud. It was built a long time ago, in 1903.
Building History
The Church of St. Stephen was built in a rural area. This community was settled by immigrants from Slovenia. Slovenia is a country in Europe. These immigrants were Catholic and built the church as a central part of their new home.
Behind the church, there is another old building called a rectory. A rectory is a house where a priest lives. This rectory was built even earlier, in 1890.
Why It's Special
Both the church and the rectory are very important. They were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means they are recognized as significant places in history.
They are important for a few reasons:
- Architecture: The church shows a special building style called Romanesque Revival.
- Settlement: It tells the story of how people settled in rural Stearns County.
- Religion: It highlights the role of Catholic immigrant groups. These groups often lived in small, close-knit communities. Each community usually had a church at its heart.
The Church of St. Stephen helps us understand the history of these early settlements. It shows how important faith was to the people who built these communities.
