Building and Design
The Church of St Luke was designed by an architect named Thomas Fulljames. He was from Gloucester. People at the time described the church as a "neat structure" built in a style called "Early English." This style is a type of Gothic architecture that was popular a long time ago. The church was officially opened for worship, or "consecrated," in 1841.
Important People
The Reverend Samuel Lysons was not only the person who funded the church, but he also served as its first minister. He was also the rector of another place called Rodmarton. He continued to lead the Church of St Luke until he stepped down in 1866. Another important person who worked at the church was Lewis Alexander Beck, who was a curate there in 1846. A curate is a priest who helps the main minister.
What Happened to the Church?
Sadly, the Church of St Luke was taken down, or "demolished," in 1934. However, some beautiful parts of the church were saved. Many of its stained glass windows were moved and reused in another church called Holy Trinity Church, Longlevens. These windows were very old, some coming from Germany or the Netherlands, and dated from the 15th to the 18th centuries.
