A Look at the Church's History
The oldest parts of the church, like its tower and some of the main hall (called the nave), were built a very long time ago. They date back to the 14th century, which means the 1300s. More work was added in the 15th century (the 1400s).
How the Church Changed Over Time
The church was greatly repaired and made bigger in the 19th century (the 1800s). An architect named Richard Carver led this important work.
Special Features Inside the Church
Inside, you can see beautiful carved wooden ends on the church benches. These are very typical of churches in this area. There is also a unique monument for two brothers, Rich, who passed away in 1813 and 1815. This monument shows tools used for farming and a beehive.
Amazing Stained Glass Windows
Some of the church's windows were made by a famous company called Morris & Co. Two of these windows were designed by Edward Burne-Jones, a well-known artist. One window shows the Angel of the Resurrection. The other window shows a group of angels playing music.
The Church Bells
The church tower holds six bells. Two of these bells are very old, from the medieval period. They were made in Exeter. Another bell dates back to 1714.
Important Families and People
Many of the memorials inside and outside the church are for members of the Labouchere and Stanley families. These families lived at Quantock Lodge, a large estate nearby. They owned much of the land in the area and helped pay for the church's repairs.
A Memorial to a Cricketer
In the churchyard, there is a large granite cross. This cross remembers Henry Stanley. He was a cricketer and was set to inherit the Quantock Lodge Estate. Sadly, he was killed during the Boer War.
A Famous Vicar
William Holland, who was known for writing in his diary, was the vicar (the main priest) of Over Stowey. He served the church from 1779 until he passed away in 1819.
The Church on a Stamp
In the year 2000, the Church of St Peter and St Paul was featured on a special Christmas stamp. This stamp was part of the Royal Mail's First Class collection.
