Building the Log Church
This beautiful church was built in 1908. A person named John C. Greenway, who was a member of the church, helped manage its construction. The logs used to build the church came from a forest that had never been cut down before. This made the building very unique.
Inside the Log Church
The inside of the church is also made completely of wood. Even the special railing around the altar and the stand where readings are given are made from birch logs. This gives the church a very natural and warm feeling. Bishop James Dow Morrison officially opened the church on November 15, 1908.
A Historic Landmark
The Church of the Good Shepherd was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. This means it's recognized as an important historical site in the United States. It's a place worth protecting for future generations.
Saving the Church Building
The church closed its doors on December 26, 1982. This happened because fewer people were attending services. However, in March 1987, the church's owner, Christ Episcopal Church in Grand Rapids, gave the building to the city of Coleraine. The city agreed to fix it up and keep it in good condition. This was important so it could stay on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Community Steps In
To help save the church, the community formed a group called the Log Church Preservation Committee. This committee works hard to maintain and restore the building. Thanks to their efforts, the church is still standing today.
What Happens There Now?
Today, the Church of the Good Shepherd is used for many different events. People can rent it for weddings, special gatherings, and cultural events. It's a beloved part of the Coleraine community.
