The History of Holy Cross Church
How the Church Started
The Church of the Holy Cross was founded by a woman named Mary Warren in the early 1840s. Her son, Nathan B. Warren, helped lead the building of the church's main area, known as the nave. This part was designed by a famous architect, Alexander Jackson Davis, and finished in 1844.
Expanding the Church Building
Later, another part of the church, called the chancel, was added. This section was designed by architect Richard Upjohn. It was completed in late 1848 and officially opened in January 1849.
Music and Education at the Church
In 1846, the Church of the Holy Cross started one of the very first choirs in an Episcopal church in the United States. During their special services, the choir would chant parts of the service, like psalms and creeds.
In 1863, the Mary Warren Free Institute was built right next to the church. This institute was created to help people learn more about religion and music. The Mary Warren Free Institute is still active today.
Why the Church Closed
Due to fewer people attending services, the Church of the Holy Cross officially closed its doors on December 6, 2009. After its closure, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute successfully bought the property.
