Chyle Hole, also known as Kyle, is a special natural dip in the ground where a stream or small river disappears! It's located in the Town of Springfield in New York. You can find it north of Chyle Road, close to the border of Warren.

Long ago, Native Americans knew this unique spot as Theogsowone. This name means "wedge," which might describe its shape or how it works.

How Chyle Hole Works

The bottom and sides of Chyle Hole are made of a type of rock called limestone. This rock is partly covered with earth. There are a few cracks in the bottom of the hole.

When there's a lot of rain or snow melting, water flows into these cracks. Sometimes, the hole fills up so much that it creates a temporary lake! This lake can cover an area as big as three acres. Eventually, all this water drains away through the cracks in the limestone.
