Chūichi Date (伊達 忠一, Date Chūichi, born January 20, 1939) is a Japanese politician who has now retired. He was a member of the Liberal Democratic Party. This party is one of the main political groups in Japan.
Mr. Date served for many years in Japan's national government. He was part of the House of Councillors, which is like one of the two main groups in Japan's parliament, called the Diet. He also held an important role as the leader of the House of Councillors.
Early Life and Political Start
Chūichi Date was born on January 20, 1939, in Ashibetsu, Hokkaido, Japan. After finishing high school, he began his career in public service.
Before joining the national government, Mr. Date worked in local politics. He was elected to the Hokkaido Prefectural Assembly. A Prefectural Assembly is like a state or regional government group. He served there from 1991 to 2001.
Serving in the National Government
In 2001, Chūichi Date was elected to the House of Councillors for the first time. This is a very important part of Japan's national legislature, the Diet. He served three terms, which means he was elected three times.
During his time in the House of Councillors, he held several important positions. From 2016 to 2019, he was the President of the House of Councillors. This role is similar to being the speaker or leader of that part of the parliament. He also led a special committee for his party in the Diet.
Mr. Date retired from his political roles in 2019.
