Akiko Santō (山東 昭子, Santō Akiko, born 11 May 1942) is a Japanese politician. She was the President of the House of Councillors from 2019 to 2022. The House of Councillors is like one of the two main parts of Japan's parliament.
Akiko Santō is a member of the Liberal Democratic Party. Before becoming President, she was the Vice President of the House of Councillors from 2007 to 2010.
Early Life and Career
Akiko Santō was born in Setagaya, Tokyo, Japan, on May 11, 1942. Her great-uncle, Kodama Ryōtarō, was also a politician. He served in the House of Representatives many years ago.
When she was eleven, Akiko Santō became a host for a children's radio show on TBS Radio. She graduated from Bunka Gakuin in 1961. Before entering politics, she worked as an actress and a reporter.
Political Journey
Akiko Santō was first elected to the House of Councillors in 1974. This is a big step in a political career.
She held several important roles in the government. She was a parliamentary vice-minister for the environment. Later, she became the Director-General of the Science and Technology Agency. This role involved leading Japan's efforts in science and technology.
In 2007, she became the Vice President of the House of Councillors. She also led important meetings for members of Japan's parliament.
After the 2019 election, Akiko Santō was chosen as the President of the House of Councillors. She held this high position until the 2022 election.
Involvement with the Senkaku Islands
Akiko Santō played a part in the sale of three of the Senkaku Islands. She knew the family who owned the land for many years. In 2011, the landowner wanted to sell the islands.
Eventually, the Japanese government bought the land in 2012. Akiko Santō helped with this important transaction.
