Akiko Santō (山東 昭子, Santō Akiko, born 11 May 1942) is a Japanese politician. She was born on May 11, 1942. From 2019 to 2022, she held a very important job. She was the President of the House of Councillors. This is like being the leader of one part of Japan's parliament.
Akiko Santō is a member of the Liberal Democratic Party. Before becoming President, she was the Vice President of the House of Councillors. She held that role from 2007 to 2010.

Early Life and Career
Akiko Santō was born in Setagaya, a part of Tokyo, Japan. This was on May 11, 1942. Her great-uncle, Kodama Ryōtarō, was also a politician. He worked in the House of Representatives a long time ago.
Starting in Entertainment
When Akiko Santō was just eleven years old, she got a special job. A friend of her mother, a composer named Ikuma Dan, suggested her. She became the host of a children's radio show on TBS Radio.
She finished her studies at Bunka Gakuin in 1961. Before becoming a politician, she worked as an actress and a reporter.
Becoming a Politician
In 1974, Akiko Santō was elected to the House of Councillors for the first time. The House of Councillors is one of the two parts of Japan's national parliament, called the Diet.
She held several important government jobs. She was a parliamentary vice-minister for the environment. Later, she became a minister and the Director General of the Science and Technology Agency. This was from 1990 to 1991.
In 2007, she became the Vice President of the House of Councillors. She also led important meetings for members of parliament.
President of the House of Councillors
After the election in 2019, Akiko Santō was chosen for a top job. She became the President of the House of Councillors. She served in this role until the 2022 election. After that election, she stepped down from the position.
Involvement in the Senkaku Islands
Akiko Santō played a part in the sale of three of the Senkaku Islands. She knew the family who owned the land for many years. In 2011, the landowner wanted to sell the islands. He preferred to sell them to the governor of Tokyo, Shintaro Ishihara. He did not want to sell them to the national government at first.
The national government, led by Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, offered to trade land. However, the governor offered cash. In the end, the Japanese government bought the land. They paid about $25.5 million in 2012.
