What Does the Name "Cibuta" Mean?
The name "Cibuta" comes from the Tohono O'odham language, which was spoken by the original people living in this area. In their language, "Cibuta" means "feather headdress."
How Cibuta Started
Cibuta was founded a long time ago by a Jesuit missionary named Eusebio Kino. He gave the town its original name: San Simón y San Judas del Síboda.
How Cibuta is Governed
Even though Cibuta is close to the city of Nogales, it's like its own separate community. It has its own local government, including its own police and a group of leaders called a cabinet. This means Cibuta makes many of its own decisions.
The Dicochea Family's Role
For many years, the Dicochea family has played a very important role in Cibuta. Their ranches surround the town, and members of their family have served as the town's president for decades.
The last two presidents from the Dicochea family have led Cibuta for more than 35 years combined. Angel Antonio Dicochea was president for over 20 years. Now, his brother, Leonardo Dicochea, is the current president. It's expected that Angel's son, Carlos Antonio Dicochea, might become the next president in the future.
