Cicely Bertha Hale (born September 5, 1884 – died June 1981) was an important British woman. She was a suffragette, which means she worked hard to get women the right to vote. She also became a health visitor, helping families with their health, and she was an author.

Cicely Hale was inspired by famous leaders like Christabel Pankhurst and Emmeline Pankhurst. In 1908, she joined the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU). This group fought for women's voting rights. Cicely worked in their information department, helping to gather news and do research. By 1912, she was in charge of this department.

She also helped to print The Suffragette newspaper, which was later called The Britannia. She did this until 1916. After that, she decided to train as a health visitor. She also got a special certificate to help with childbirth.

A Life of Helping Others

Cicely Hale became a health visitor superintendent at the Salisbury Street clinic. She held this important job for sixteen years. A health visitor helps families, especially new parents, with advice on looking after babies and young children.

Writing for Families

For nine years, Cicely wrote a weekly column for Woman's Own magazine. Her column gave advice about babies. She also wrote a book called Can I Help you with Baby?. This book was so popular that it was printed three times!

Helping Girl Guides

In 1947, Cicely met Mary Cuningham Chater, who worked with the Girl Guides Association. Cicely then became very involved with the Girl Guides herself.

  • She became a secretary for the Arun Valley Guides.
  • She helped put together International Song Books for the Guides.
  • She ran a Brownie group, which is for younger girls.
  • She even worked as a camp nurse for three summers, helping girls who got sick or hurt at camp.

Sharing Her Story

In 1975, Cicely Hale published her own book about her life. It was called a memoir. After her book came out, she became well-known as one of the few suffragettes still alive. She spoke on the radio, in schools, and on television, sharing her experiences.

Cicely Hale lived with her friend Ann Campbell for twenty years. Later, she lived in Mary Cuningham Chater's home for several years. After that, they lived in homes right next to each other.

Legacy

Cicely Hale's work and dedication are still remembered today. In 2018, a special plaque and a tree were placed in Marina Gardens, Littlehampton. This was done to honor her and her important contributions.
