The Cigüela (sometimes spelled Gigüela) is an important river in Castile-La Mancha, Spain. It flows for about 225 kilometers (140 miles) and is a branch of the larger Guadiana River. The Cigüela starts high up in the mountains and plays a big role in keeping a special natural area called the Tablas de Daimiel wetlands healthy.

What is the Cigüela River?

The Cigüela River is a natural waterway that begins in the Iberian System mountains. Its source, or starting point, is near a small village called Puerto de Cabrejas in the Cuenca Province. From there, it travels across the land, collecting water from smaller streams and rivers along the way.

Where does the Cigüela River flow?

As the Cigüela flows, it makes its way through the region of Castile-La Mancha. It eventually joins the Guadiana River, which is one of the longest rivers in Spain. The journey of the Cigüela helps to shape the landscape and provides water for many plants and animals.

Why is the Cigüela River important?

The Cigüela River is super important because it provides most of the water for the Tablas de Daimiel wetlands. Wetlands are like natural sponges; they are areas of land that are covered by water, either all the time or just for certain parts of the year. They are home to many different kinds of birds, fish, and other wildlife. The water from the Cigüela helps these wetlands stay wet and full of life.

Who are the Cigüela River's friends?

The Cigüela River doesn't flow alone. It has several "friends," which are smaller rivers and streams that flow into it, adding more water. The most important of these is the Záncara River. The Záncara joins the Cigüela near a place called Ojos del Guadiana, close to Villarrubia de los Ojos. Some people even debate if the Cigüela flows into the Záncara, or the other way around!

Other rivers that join the Cigüela include:

  • The Jualón
  • The Torrejón
  • The Valdejudíos
  • The Amarguillo

All these rivers work together to create the water system that supports the natural environment in this part of Spain.
