Circasia (Spanish pronunciation: [siɾˈkasja]) is a town and a municipality in the northern part of the Quindío Department in Colombia. A municipality is like a local government area. It is about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) north of Armenia, which is the capital city of the Quindío region.
Circasia is part of the famous Colombian coffee growing axis. This area is known for its beautiful coffee farms. In 2011, the historic center of Circasia became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means it's a very special place recognized for its cultural importance around the world.

History of Circasia
How Circasia Was Founded
Circasia was started in 1884 by a person named Javier Arias. It grew and became its own separate municipality in 1906. Before that, it was part of another town called Filandia. In 2023, about 29,500 people lived in Circasia.
The Free Cemetery
Circasia is famous for its Free Cemetery (in Spanish, Cementerio Libre). You can find it just outside the town on the road to Montenegro. It was created in 1933 by Braulio Botero.
This cemetery was special because anyone could be buried there. It didn't matter what their religious beliefs were. Today, the Free Cemetery is a strong symbol for freedom and equality for everyone.
Climate in Circasia
Circasia has a subtropical highland climate. This means it has mild temperatures all year round. The average temperature is about 18 °C (64 °F). This cool climate is very pleasant.
Exploring Circasia's Geography
The town is located close to the main highway. This highway connects Armenia and Pereira, which is in the Risaralda region.
There's also a paved road that goes southwest to Montenegro. This road passes through many of the rural areas of Circasia. Another rural road goes north to Filandia. This road goes down to cross the Roble River at a spot called the Aguadeños Pass (Paso de los Aguadeños). However, most public transportation to Filandia uses the main highway.
