Citrus inodora, often called the Russell River lime, is a unique tree. It is also known as the large leaf Australian wild lime. This tree grows naturally in the Bellenden Ker Range area of northern Queensland, Australia.

It lives in warm, wet tropical rainforests near the coast. Sadly, many of these forests have been cleared for farming. This means the Russell River lime is becoming quite rare. People do not currently grow its fruits for sale.

About the Russell River Lime

The Russell River lime is a shrub that can grow up to 4 meters (about 13 feet) tall. Its fruit is shaped like an egg and is yellowish-green.

One interesting thing about this plant is its smell. Unlike most citrus plants, its leaves and flowers do not have a strong scent. They lack the strong, pleasant smells found in lemons or oranges.

A Close Relative: Maiden's Australian Lime

There is another plant called Citrus maideniana, or Maiden's Australian lime. Some scientists think it is a type or close relative of the Russell River lime.

These two plants grow in similar areas. The main difference is how the fruit looks at the very top. Sometimes, Citrus maideniana is even considered the same species as Citrus inodora.
