City Square Shopping Centre is a cool shopping mall in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It's right across the street from City Hall. You can find it in a special old part of central Vancouver, at 12th Avenue and Cambie Street.
This shopping mall and office building opened in 1989. It's a great example of taking old buildings and giving them a new life. This is called adaptive reuse.
A Look Back: City Square's History
City Square is special because it mixes new and old buildings. The older parts of the complex were built a long time ago, in 1905 and 1908. They used to be schools!
The Model School and Normal School
The building from 1905 was called the Model School. The one from 1908 was the Normal School. These weren't just regular schools for kids. They were places where future teachers learned their skills.
- At the Normal School, teachers-in-training learned the "norms" or standard ways of teaching.
- They also got to practice teaching in the Model School. This helped them gain real-world experience.
In 1986, the City of Vancouver decided these old school buildings were very important. They were named "municipal heritage sites." This meant they were protected and could not be torn down. Instead, they were given a new purpose as part of City Square.
