What is the Civic Theatre?

The Civic Theatre is a very important building in Invercargill. It's located right in the middle of the city on Tay Street. This theatre is so special that it has a "Category I listing" from Heritage New Zealand. This means it's a building of national importance, like a historical treasure!

A Look at Its History

How the Theatre Was Built

The Civic Theatre was built a long time ago, in 1906. It was created to replace an older theatre called the Royal Theatre, which had closed a few years before. When it first opened, the building wasn't just a theatre. It also held the offices for the Invercargill City Council, which is like the local government for the city.

Most of the council's offices moved out in the 1960s. However, the building still has the main Council Chamber and a committee room.

Who Designed This Grand Building?

A local architect named E. R. Wilson designed the Civic Theatre. He created a two-storey building in a style called Edwardian Neo-Baroque. This style looks very grand and fancy, with lots of detailed decorations.

The building was actually like two separate parts. The city council offices were at the front. The theatre part was behind them, connected by a big staircase. When it first opened, the theatre could hold up to 1,350 people! It was used for both opera shows and plays.

Changes Over the Years

From 1919 until the 1950s, the Civic Theatre was used for both live shows and movies. Imagine watching a film in such a grand old theatre!

The building has been updated several times. It had a renovation in 1984. Then, it got a big makeover and upgrade between 2004 and 2005. After these updates, the theatre can now seat 1,015 people comfortably. It continues to be a busy place for entertainment in Invercargill.
