How Civil Bend Got Its Name

The name "Civil Bend" comes from a special feature of the nearby Grand River. A "bend" in a river is exactly what it sounds like – a curve or turn in the water's path. In this case, there was a significant bend in the Grand River that was known as "Civil Bend." The community that grew up near it simply took on the same name.

Mapping Out the Community

Even though Civil Bend wasn't a city, people still planned out its layout. In 1868, the area was officially platted. This means someone drew up detailed maps showing where streets would go and how the land would be divided into smaller pieces, or lots. It was a way to organize the community as it grew.

The Civil Bend Post Office

For many years, Civil Bend was an important stop for mail. A post office was set up in Civil Bend in 1862. This post office helped people send and receive letters and packages for over 40 years! It stayed open until 1906, connecting the community to the rest of the world.
