The Clanculus euchelioides, also known as the small top shell, is a type of sea snail. It's a mollusk that lives in the ocean. This snail belongs to the family called Trochidae, which are often known as top snails because of their shell shape.

About This Snail's Shell

The shell of the small top shell is quite strong. It usually measures between 6 mm and 9 mm in size. That's about as long as a small button!

The shell has a shape that looks a bit like a spinning top. It's usually a reddish color and you can't see through it. It has about six whorls, which are the turns or spirals of the shell. The top part of the shell, called the spire, has whorls that are separated by a small groove.

The main part of the shell, called the body whorl, is rounded. The bottom of the shell is mostly flat and has a small, false belly-button-like opening called an umbilicus.

The opening of the shell, called the aperture, is slanted and shaped like a diamond-oval. The edge of this opening, called the lip, is thin. Inside the opening, you might see a rainbow-like shine.

A special part inside the shell, called the columella, is straight and looks like a rib. It has a small tooth-like bump at its base. The shell also has raised lines or ribs that go around it. These ribs can have small bumps on them.

What makes this snail special is its slanted ribs and its wide umbilicus. These features help tell it apart from many other snails in the same group.

Where It Lives

This sea snail lives in the ocean waters around Australia. You can find it off the coasts of Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia.
