What Does Clanculus maugeri Look Like?
The shell of Clanculus maugeri is quite sturdy and thick. It has a shape like a cone. The shell usually measures between 20 and 26 millimeters tall. Its widest part, the diameter, is about 25 millimeters.
Shell Color and Pattern
This snail's shell can be reddish-brown or yellowish-brown. It often has tiny dots of a slightly darker color. These dots help it blend in with its surroundings.
Shell Structure and Features
The shell has about eight whorls, which are the spiral turns. These whorls are mostly flat on top. The lines between the whorls, called sutures, are not very deep.
The very tip of the shell, known as the apex, might have spiral lines. These lines are often dotted with red. The rest of the whorls have tiny, closely packed bumps. These bumps are arranged in spiral rows. This fine bumpy texture is a key feature of Clanculus maugeri.
The largest whorl, called the body whorl, has about seven rows of these bumps. It has a ridge around its edge. The bottom of the shell is almost flat. It has many fine, beaded lines that go in circles. There can be about 15 to 20 of these lines.
The Shell's Opening
The opening of the shell is called the aperture. It is shaped like a rectangle and is angled. The upper edge of the opening is straight and has small wrinkles inside. The outer and bottom edges are thick and curved. They also have small bumps or ridges inside.
The central pillar of the shell, the columella, is very slanted. Its edge has small teeth. At the bottom, it ends in a sharp or square-shaped tooth. The inner wall of the shell and the central hole, called the umbilicus, are rough. The umbilicus is surrounded by a ribbed edge with small folds or teeth.
Where Does Clanculus maugeri Live?
This sea snail lives only in Australia. It is found in the waters off New South Wales, Tasmania, and Victoria. You can find it in both the shallow waters near the shore and slightly deeper areas.
