Clara Birnberg (born around 1892 or 1894, died 1989) was a talented British artist. She was an illustrator, a portrait painter, and a sculptor. After she married fellow artist Stephen Weinstein, they both changed their last name to Winsten. Clara then became known as Clare Winsten. They also became Quaker humanists, which means they believed in treating all people with kindness and respect, and worked for a better world.
Early Life and Art School
Clara Birnberg's family moved to England in 1902. Her father was from a place called Ternopil, which is now in Ukraine.
Clare loved art and studied at the famous Slade School of Fine Art from 1910 to 1912. While there, she met other artists like Isaac Rosenberg and David Bomberg. She became the only girl in their group of artists and poets, who were known as the 'Whitechapel Boys'.
In 1914, Clare was the only female artist to show her work at a big art show. It was called "Twentieth Century Art: A Review of Modern Movements" and featured post-Impressionist art. This exhibition was held at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, and the 'Whitechapel Boys' group played a big part in it.
Working with Famous People
Clare Winsten created many amazing sculptures. One of her sculptures is at Toynbee Hall in Whitechapel. She also made a sculpture of Joan of Arc for the garden of George Bernard Shaw's house. Shaw was a very famous writer, and the Winstens were his neighbors.
Clare also helped George Bernard Shaw with his books. She drew pictures for his book Buoyant Billions: A Comedy of No Manners in Prose (published in 1949). She also illustrated My Dear Dorothea (published in 1956), which was a book Shaw wrote when he was young.
Besides illustrating, Clare painted George Bernard Shaw many times. She also made a bronze sculpture of him in 1946. This sculpture later went to the British Museum. Clare also drew pictures of other famous people, including the composer Dmitri Shostakovich, the musician Benjamin Britten, and the peace leader Mahatma Gandhi.
Family Life
Clare Winsten had a daughter named Ruth Harrison. Ruth became well-known for her work helping animals. She was a strong supporter of animal welfare. Ruth married Dexter Harrison, who was an architect in London.
