Clara Bohitile: A Namibian Leader
Clara Bohitile was born in Windhoek, Namibia, on November 19, 1955. She grew up to become a very important person in her country. She is known for her work in politics and business.
Growing Up and Learning
Clara went to school in Windhoek, first at the Catholic School in the Old Location. This was a neighborhood where black people lived. She also studied at schools near Gobabis and in Döbra.
For her college studies, Clara went to Tshiye College and Vista University in South Africa. She studied Home Economics there. After finishing her studies, she became a teacher. She taught at Immanuel Shifidi Secondary School in Windhoek. Besides teaching, she also started farming. This was the beginning of her journey into politics and business.
Helping Her Country: Political Work
Clara Bohitile is a member of the SWAPO political party. She served in the National Assembly of Namibia, which is like Namibia's parliament. She was a member from 1995 to 2005.
During this time, she was also the Deputy Minister of Basic Education and Culture. This means she helped lead the country's education system. She returned to the National Assembly later, from 2007 to 2010. Clara is also part of SWAPO's main leadership group, called the Central Committee.
A Successful Businesswoman
Besides her political work, Clara Bohitile is also a very successful farmer. She runs a large farm that sells its products. In 2006, she was even named the "Emerging Farmer of the Year." This award recognized her hard work and success in farming.
In 2010, Clara made history. She was chosen to be on the board of MeatCo Namibia. This is a big company that deals with meat in Namibia. She was the first woman ever to lead the MeatCo board! She also served on the board of the Windhoek Country Club and Casino.
Special Awards
In 2014, Clara Bohitile received a special award. It was called the "Excellent Order of the Eagle, third Class." This award is given to people who have done great things for Namibia. She received it on Heroes' Day, a national holiday.
