The Clarendon Congregational Church is a very old and special church building in Clarendon, Vermont. People also call it the Old Brick Church or the Brick Church at Clarendon. It was built way back in 1824. Later, in the 1880s, it got some cool new designs that looked like old Gothic buildings. This church is a great example of a 19th-century brick church that has been kept in good shape. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Today, Rev. Bill Kingsley is the minister there.

What Does the Church Look Like?

The Clarendon Congregational Church is in the old town center of Clarendon. It's across from the town offices. It faces a small town park on the east side of Middle Road. The church is a single-story building made of brick. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides, like a triangle, and is covered with slate tiles.

A part of the building sticks out from the front (west side). This part has a triangular roof too. A tall, square tower rises above it. This tower then turns into an eight-sided steeple at the very top. The church has tall windows that can slide up and down. These windows are set in rounded openings. Above each window, there's a half-round window.

The part that sticks out has a full triangular roof above two doors. It is wide enough for two sections. Each section has a door that is set back a little. These doors are also in round-arch openings. They have half-round windows above them. There is also a semi-oval window above each door.

How Old Is the Church?

The church group, called a congregation, started in 1822. The building you see today was built in 1824. When it was first built, it had a square bell tower. The windows were also simpler back then.

Even though fewer people lived in the town, the church became popular again in the 1880s. This is when the tall steeple was added. A famous bridge builder named Nicholas Powers built it. More beautiful stained glass windows were also put in at this time.

Later, fewer and fewer people joined the church. In the 1920s, regular church services stopped for a while. But services started again in 1935. In 1983, this church group joined with another group. Together, they formed the Clarendon Congregational Church we know today.
