Clareton is a small, quiet place located in the southern part of Weston County, Wyoming, in the United States. It sits about one mile south of State Highway 450. Clareton is found within the large area known as the Thunder Basin National Grassland, which is a special type of protected land managed for its natural resources. South and east of Clareton, you'll find the Clareton Oil Field, where oil is collected from underground.

How Clareton Got Its Name

The area of Clareton was first settled by a man named Clarence Arthur Townsend and his family. They were pioneers who came to live in this part of Wyoming. The name "Clareton" was created by combining parts of Clarence's name.

Clarence Townsend also built an important building called the Grange hall. A Grange hall is a community center, often used by farmers and their families. In Clareton's Grange hall, there was also a store where people could buy supplies and a post office to send and receive mail.

What's the Weather Like in Clareton?

The weather near Clareton, at a place called Rochelle 7ENE, shows that the area has a climate that changes a lot with the seasons. It's mostly a humid continental climate, which means it has warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Sometimes, it can also feel like a cold semi-arid climate, which means it's quite dry, especially in some parts of the year.

Clareton gets most of its rain and snow in the spring and early summer. April, May, June, and July are usually the wettest months. Snowfall is common in winter, especially in February, March, and December.
