ClariS is a Japanese pop music duo (a group of two people) known for their catchy songs. The group is made up of two talented high school girls named Clara and Alice, who are from Hokkaido, Japan. ClariS started out by singing cover songs (their own versions of popular songs) that were often from anime shows or originally sung by Vocaloids (computer-generated singing voices).

They shared their cover songs on a video sharing website called Nico Nico Douga from October 2009 to June 2010. Their unique sound quickly gained attention. In September 2010, ClariS signed with SME Records, a major music company. They released their first official song, "Irony," in October 2010. This song became famous as the opening theme for the 2010 anime series Oreimo. ClariS continued to release many popular singles and their first album, Birthday, came out in April 2012.

Who Are ClariS?

ClariS is a special kind of music group called an "idol unit" in Japan. They are known for keeping their faces hidden, often appearing with masks or illustrated characters. This mystery makes them unique. Their music is mostly J-Pop, which is a style of Japanese popular music. They also mix in sounds from synthpop (music made with synthesizers) and pop rock.

How ClariS Began

Before they were known as ClariS, Clara and Alice called themselves "Alice Clara." They loved to sing and decided to share their talent online. They chose songs that were popular in the anime world and also songs created using Vocaloid software. Posting these songs on Nico Nico Douga helped them build a fan base. This online success led to them being discovered by a big record label.

Their Music and Anime Connections

After signing with SME Records, ClariS quickly became popular. Their songs are often chosen as theme songs for anime shows. This connection to anime has helped them reach many fans around the world. Their debut single "Irony" was just the beginning. They released six more singles between 2011 and 2013, showing their growing success in the music industry. Their first album, Birthday, was a big step in their career.
