Claribel Kendall (January 23, 1889 – April 17, 1965) was an American mathematician. She was known for her long career teaching mathematics at the University of Colorado. She also helped many women study math.

Studying Mathematics

Claribel Kendall was born in Denver, Colorado in 1889. She went to the University of Colorado and earned two bachelor's degrees in 1912. One was a Bachelor of Education.

She continued her studies and received her master's degree in mathematics in 1914. At this time, it was becoming more common for women to go to college. However, math and science were still mostly studied by men. Claribel was one of the women who helped change this.

While working on her master's degree, Claribel started teaching math at the University of Colorado in 1913. After getting her master's, she decided to pursue an even higher degree.

Earning Her Ph.D.

Claribel Kendall attended the University of Chicago for several summers between 1915 and 1918. In 1920, she received a special scholarship called a fellowship. This helped her finish her studies.

She earned her Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) from the University of Chicago in January 1922. This is the highest degree you can get in a field of study. Her important research was published in the American Journal of Mathematics in 1923.

Teaching Career

Claribel Kendall taught at the University of Colorado Boulder for a very long time. She started in 1913 and retired in 1957. By 1944, she had become a full professor, which is a top teaching position.

She was a great mentor to her students. Claribel guided ten students as they wrote their master's theses. Eight of these students were women. This shows her dedication to helping women succeed in mathematics.

Claribel was also involved in many academic groups. She was the Secretary of the University of California chapter of Phi Beta Kappa for over 30 years. This is a very old and respected honor society for college students. She also helped solve problems published in the American Mathematical Monthly, a math magazine.

Awards and Recognition

Claribel Kendall was the first person in her department to receive the Robert L. Stearns Award. The University of Colorado Boulder gives this award for "outstanding service or achievement." This shows how much her work was valued.

She was also a founding member of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). She helped start the Rocky Mountain Section of the MAA in 1917. This organization helps math teachers and students.
