Clarion is a small, quiet place in Bureau County, Illinois, United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and buildings that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Clarion is located near a railroad line, southwest of a larger town called Mendota.

What is Clarion?

Clarion is often thought of as the area where you can see a grain elevator and a Lutheran church. These buildings are located along U.S. Route 34. However, this specific spot is actually known as Wendel. So, while they are very close, Clarion and Wendel are technically different places.

Schools in the Area

Even though Clarion isn't a formal town, families live there. Children who live near the railroad crossing that people call Clarion go to schools in a nearby district called La Moille. This shows how communities can share resources like schools, even if they don't have their own town hall.

History of Clarion

Clarion has a bit of history, especially when it comes to education.

Old Schoolhouse Location

Long ago, there was a schoolhouse right in Clarion. It was located on the southwest corner of what is now called the Clarion Blacktop and 2500 N. Avenue. This school would have been where children from the area learned their lessons many years ago.

Farmland and Homes

Today, the Clarion area is mostly made up of gently rolling farmland. You can also find several older homesteads, which are historic farmhouses and buildings. These homes remind us of the area's farming past and how people have lived and worked the land for generations.
