The Clark Brothers Factory No. 2 is a cool old factory building in Southington, Connecticut. It's also known as the Clark Brothers Bolt Company. This factory was built a long time ago, between 1911 and 1918. It shows us what industrial buildings looked like in the early 1900s.

For many years, this factory was a very important workplace in Southington. It helped many people in the community find jobs. Because of its history and unique design, the factory was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. This means it's a special place worth protecting!

What is the Clark Brothers Factory No. 2?

The Clark Brothers Factory No. 2 is located in the Milldale part of Southington. You can find it on the east side of Canal Street. It's between Burritt Street and Connecticut Route 322.

This factory is a long group of buildings. Most of it is squeezed between the road and an old railroad track. This track is now a walking and biking path called the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail.

How Many Buildings Are There?

The factory has eleven buildings in total. Ten of these buildings are connected to each other. There is also a separate boiler house. This boiler house is across the old railroad tracks.

What Did the Buildings Look Like?

Some of the buildings have special roofs. One large building, where things were made, has a "sawtooth roof." This kind of roof has many peaks and valleys, like the teeth of a saw. It lets in lots of natural light.

Another building was used for heat-treating and forging metal. It has a "monitor roof." This roof has a raised section in the middle with windows. This design also helped bring in light and fresh air.

The History of Clark Brothers Company

The Clark Brothers Company was one of the first big factories in Southington. It played a huge part in helping the town grow into an industrial area in the late 1800s.

What Did They Make?

In the 1850s, the company created special machines. These machines were used to make carriage bolts. Carriage bolts are a type of fastener, like a screw or a nail, used to hold things together. The company eventually made the whole process of making these bolts automatic!

Where Was the First Factory?

The first Clark Brothers factory was on South Main Street. That building is not there anymore. The company decided to build this new factory, Factory No. 2, starting in 1911.

Instead of using water power, like many old factories, this new one used steam power. This steam power helped run all the machines.

How Did the Factory Grow?

The factory got even bigger during the First World War. This was a time when many factories were busy making things for the war effort. The Clark Brothers Factory started making other types of fasteners too. They made many different kinds of bolts and screws.
