Sir Claud Hamilton (died 1640) was an important person in Ireland. He was in charge of the Fort of Toome in County Antrim, which is in Ulster. Sometimes, people get him mixed up with another person named Claud Hamilton of Shawfield.

Who Was Claud Hamilton?

Claud Hamilton was born in Scotland. He was the oldest son of Claud Hamilton of Cochno and Margaret Betoun. His father's family, the Hamiltons, were a well-known Scottish clan. They were a branch of the powerful Clan Hamilton.

Claud had a younger brother named Archibald. Archibald later became an important church leader, the Anglican Archbishop of Cashel.

His Friend, Another Claud Hamilton

Claud Hamilton had a friend who also happened to be named Sir Claud Hamilton of Shawfield. Because they had the same name, people sometimes confused them. Claud Hamilton was even there when his friend died in Dublin in 1614.

Claud Hamilton's Marriages

First Marriage

Claud Hamilton first married Mary Hamilton. She was the only child of Sir Robert Hamilton of Elieston. Mary's father was involved in the Plantation of Ulster. This was a time when Scottish and English settlers moved to Ireland. Mary's father settled in County Tyrone and named his new home Ellieston.

Claud Hamilton did not have any children with Mary. However, he inherited the Ellieston manor in County Tyrone after her father passed away.

Second Marriage

Later, Claud married Anne Colley. She was the daughter of Henry Colley from Carbury Castle, County Kildare.

Claud and Anne had four children together. Their son, Robert, sadly died when he was young. They also had three daughters, but their names are not known today.

Constable of Toome Fort

On 6 October 1618, Claud Hamilton was given an important job. He was made the constable of the Fort of Toome. This fort was also known as the Castle of Toome. Being a constable meant he was in charge of the fort and its security.

His Death

There are different ideas about when Claud Hamilton died. Some records say he died on 5 June 1640 in Roscrea, County Tipperary. They say he was buried in a monastery there. However, other records suggest he might have died earlier, in 1629.
