Claude Bowes-Lyon (born 21 July 1824 – died 16 February 1904) was a very important person in British history. He held the title of the 13th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne.
He is also famous for being the grandfather of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. This means he was the great-grandfather of Elizabeth II and the great-great-grandfather of Charles III.
Life of Claude Bowes-Lyon
Claude Lyon-Bowes was born in a place called Redbourn, in Hertfordshire, England. He was the second son of Thomas George Lyon-Bowes, Lord Glamis. His mother was Charlotte Grimstead.
He later changed his family name to Bowes-Lyon.
His Interests and Roles
Claude Bowes-Lyon enjoyed playing cricket, a popular sport. He played in four important matches, including three times for the Marylebone Cricket Club. He also played once for the Gentlemen of England.
In 1865, he became the 13th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. This happened after his older brother, Thomas, passed away.
A town in Canada, Strathmore, Alberta, was named after him in 1884. This shows how important he was.
In 1887, he received another special title: Baron Bowes. This was a new title created just for him.
He was also chosen to represent Scottish nobles in the British Parliament. This role, called a representative peer, lasted from 1870 to 1892. From 1874 until his death, he was the King's representative in the area of Angus, Scotland. This role was called Lord Lieutenant of Angus.
His Final Years
The Earl died in Bordighera, a beautiful place in Italy. He passed away in his home there, called Villa Etelinda. This villa was named after an opera composed by his daughter, Lady Mildred Marion. The villa was later sold to the Italian royal family.
His Family
On 28 September 1853, Claude married Frances Dora Smith. They had 11 children together.
Their most famous child was Claude Bowes-Lyon, 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. He became the father of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. This makes him the grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II.
One of their daughters, Lady Mildred Marion Bowes-Lyon, was a music composer. She was known for her opera called Etelinda. This opera was first performed in Florence in 1894.
