Claude Mithon de Senneville de Genouilly was a brave officer in the French Navy. He was born in Saint-Domingue. He played a part in the American Revolutionary War, which was a big fight for independence.

Claude Mithon de Genouilly came from an important family. His father was an 'Intendant' in Toulon, France, which meant he was a high-ranking official.
Claude started his navy career very young. He joined the French Navy as a Garde-Marine on December 14, 1743. A Garde-Marine was a young officer trainee.
He quickly moved up the ranks:
- He became a Lieutenant on May 15, 1756.
- He was promoted to Captain on February 18, 1772.
Fighting in Key Battles
Claude Mithon de Genouilly commanded several important ships during his time in the navy.
Battle of Ushant (1778)
In 1778, Captain Genouilly commanded the 60-gun ship named Saint Michel. He led his ship in the Battle of Ushant, which took place on July 27, 1778. This was a major naval battle during the American Revolutionary War.
Reinforcing American Forces (1779)
In 1779, Genouilly took command of the 70-gun ship called Dauphin Royal. His ship was part of a group led by Admiral De Grasse. Their mission was to sail to America and help the French forces already there, led by Admiral Estaing.
Battle of the Saintes (1782)
In 1782, Genouilly first commanded the 74-gun ship Magnifique. Later, he moved to another 74-gun ship called Couronne.
On board Couronne, he took part in the Battle of the Saintes. This battle happened on April 12, 1782, and was another important naval clash during the war.
Later Career
After his many years of service and bravery in battles, Claude Mithon de Genouilly received another promotion. He became a Chef d'Escadre on August 20, 1784. This was a very high rank in the French Navy, similar to a Rear Admiral.
