Claudio Castelucho y Diana (born July 5, 1870, in Barcelona; died October 31, 1927, in Paris) was a talented Spanish artist. He was a sculptor, a painter, and a popular art teacher. Claudio came from Catalonia in Spain, but he spent most of his life living and working in France.
Biography of Claudio Castelucho
Claudio's father, Antoni Castelucho Vendrell, was a stage designer. This means he designed the sets and scenery for plays and shows. Claudio learned a lot about art from his father. He even helped his father write books about how to draw things to look like they have depth, which is called perspective.
Claudio started showing his art in exhibitions when he was still a teenager. In 1892, after studying briefly at the "Escuela de Bellas Artes de Barcelona," he moved to Paris, France, with his family.
Early Career in Paris
When he first arrived in Paris, Claudio worked with his father and younger brother. They continued to work as decorators, probably designing for stages or buildings. In his free time, Claudio started painting landscapes. These were paintings of outdoor scenes like fields, mountains, or forests.
He showed his landscape paintings for the first time in France at a famous art show called the Salon in 1897. People really liked his paintings that showed Spanish themes. So, he decided to paint more scenes and people from Spain.
A Popular Art Teacher
Claudio Castelucho became a professor at the Académie Colarossi, which was a well-known art school in Paris. In 1905, he became one of the first teachers at another new art school called the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. This school was started by two artists, Alice Dannenberg and Martha Stettler.
As a teacher, Claudio was very popular. Many students, especially those from other countries who came to Paris to study art, loved his classes. Some of his famous students included Kathleen O'Connor from Australia, Edwin Holgate from Canada, and Alice Pike Barney and Ellen Ravenscroft from the United States.
In 1913, Claudio had a big art show at the Galerie Moos in Geneva. This gallery was known for showing modern art. He displayed some of his Spanish paintings there. He had painted these after a short visit back home to Spain in 1910. Except for another quick trip home at the start of World War I, Claudio stayed in Paris for the rest of his life. He continued to show his art regularly at the Salon.
