The Clearwater River is a short but important river on the West Coast of the South Island in New Zealand. It gets its name because its water is often very clear!
This river starts high up on the northern slopes of Mount Mitchell. This mountain is part of the Victoria Range. The river's source is not far from the famous Fox Glacier and the Fox River.
The Clearwater River and its smaller streams collect water from the land north of the Cook (Weheka) River. As it flows, the river goes under a bridge on State Highway 6. This is just north of the small town of Fox Glacier.
Soon after, the river passes very close to the beautiful Lake Matheson. Finally, the Clearwater River flows into the Cook River. The Cook River then carries its water all the way to the Tasman Sea.
